Rock - Porcellanite
Rock - Porcellanite

A band of rock the "Townsend Tuff " , is exposed , sandwiched between
Old Red Sandstone ,in the Cliff and on the beach at Little Castle Head (west of Sandy Haven).
This Tuff was formed as a result of Volcanic dust and ash being deposited in the sea
and forming a sedimentary layer on the sea bed / mud flats.
There are 3 distinct layers in the band.
The fine grained rocks in this band are Porcellanite , a hard dense rock somewhat similar
in appearance to unglazed porcelain , a Siliceous Tuff .
The band on the right of the photo is of a magenta / light green colour.
The "Townsend Tuff" band is exposed in the Old Red Sandstone in many locations
on the Pembrokeshire Coast including the foreshore at Townsend (Dale) and
Old Castle Head (nr Skrinkle Haven - on MOD Land ! )
