founded by William de Valence , a 13th century three storeyed spur-tower
overlooking the Mill Pond .
One of six towers which at one time flanked the Pembroke town walls,
built in the late 13/14 century.
Each tower was the responsibility of a local Feudal Lord.
The Lord of Carew was responsible for the Barnard’s Tower.
A large Defensible Tower capable of housing a garrison of troops.
The entrance to the Towers forebuilding was once defended by a bridge-pit and its vaulted
passage was guarded by a gate and a portcullis. A spiral stair, gives access to all the floors
and the dome-vault roof supports the remains of a parapet.
Today it is home to a nursery roost of Daubentons Bats.
