Pembroke Castle
Pembroke Castle

Around 1093 ,the Norman - Arnulf de Montgomery , Earl of Shrewsbury ,
built the small inner bailey standing at the end of the promontory.
In 1189 William Marshal became Earl of Pembroke and the castle passed into his hands. Over the next 30 years he transformed the earth and timber structure into a powerful
stone fortification , building the colossal circular keep with domed roof and much of the
Inner Ward. .
In the 13th century the new Great Hall was built with a towering mass of walling projecting
over its south-east corner to enclose the mouth of a large cavern (Wogan) in the rock below,
which may have served as a boathouse.
In 1457, under Jasper Tudor, earl of Pembroke, his nephew the future King Henry VII
was born within the walls.
During the Civil War , in 1648 , Oliver Cromwell personally oversaw its siege and
partial destruction.
Extensive restoration took place 1879-1939.
